When it comes to ethics, I like to ask the question "Does this behavior harm the other person?"
With indirect approaches, the answer is categorically "No" in my opinion, and so I think it's perfectly ethical.
Dishonesty can often times be the most ethical choice. You might have noticed that if you go around speaking the real truth that is on your mind, people will very quickly get offended and think you're a rude asshole. Dishonesty is often a social lubricant. We need it, it's part of normal social behavior.
If I was 100% honest and I walked up to a girl and said "I think your face is hot and I was just imagining what it would look like with my cum on it" I am honest, but also unethical because such a comment might make the other person very uncomfortable and feel violated in some way.
So when it comes to ethics, always ask yourself if it will harm the other person. Being dishonest about certain things, can harm the other person. For example pretending you want a long-term relationship when actually you just want a one night stand. But hiding your romantic or sexual interest isn't harmful in itself. Everyone does that all the time and it doesn't harm anyone.

You should follow your own sense of ethics. I simply stated how I see it. You don't have to agree. I took your post as asking about other people's opinions. Not just as an attempt of seeking to validate your own opinion.

Humans are also animals. Never forget that. Some women feel sexually objectified and turned off if you go with the direct approach even if you don't say anything sexual, but you just say "hey, you seemed cute to me so I wanted to talk to you". Some women feel massively uncomfortable in that setting. Just letting you know

No you won't. You will end up hurting women even if you do everything in your power to not hurt them. Relationships, romance and sex, come with hurt sooner or later. The only way to never hurt a woman is to not enter into any kind of relationship with them. Have you been in a long-term romantic relationship before?

That's why you say that. If you have been in a few long-term relationships you realize it's impossible to not hurt your partner.
Are are just three out of MANY scenarios where being honest will hurt her feelings.
Your girlfriend is not very good at sex. She asks you "Do you think I am good at sex?" And then you answer honestly "no". This will probably hurt her feelings.
You are walking outside with your girlfriend when you pass another beautiful girl. Your girlfriend asks "if you were single, would you have sex with that girl?" You answer honestly "yes". Again, this might hurt her feelings.
Your girlfriend comes home with a new hair color. You don't like it. She asks you "what do you think about my new hair color?" You answer honestly "I don't like it". Again, most likely this reply will hurt her feelings.
I could go on an on with 1000 examples

It's a waste of time since you will have to let her know you like her at some point. So why wait?

You can start the conversation with an indirect opener but your vibe and intent should be direct. Indirect buys time and allows you to evaluate her as well to see if you even like her etc.

He’s just saying starting off as friends intentionally when he clearly has other motives from the beginning.

The real goal here is to only be dishonest with words, but very honest with non verbal communication and subtext. You want the girl to know you’re approaching her because you’re romantically or sexually interested in her, but you don’t say it with words. You say it with intonation, body language, eye contact, etc. A lot of guys in the beginning will do indirect approach and actually act out what they’re saying instead of the real intention, and then they are genuinely being deceptive which is no good for either party.
If you’re a beginner do exclusively direct approach. It is the less effective of the two techniques, but more effective than bad indirect approach. Once you get good at direct approach, you will understand much better how to do indirect approach. Also look at todd V dating when he describes “man to woman” interaction. Direct approach sets that up for you right from the get go. With indirect approach you have to be subtle and attentive enough to your own body language and intonation to ensure it’s communicated through it, its much more difficult (but more fun).
Eventually you’ll get to a point where you’re unbelievably brazen with your body language, but it’s all under a veil of plausible deniability in speech, and this is great fun.
