Lots of conflicting advice on this.

The best way I've found to handle this is by using texting as part of your initial interaction. So you get her number in the middle of your first interaction then you start texting her right then and there.

It can go like...

You: So me and my friends are going to this party over at XYZ, you should come. Bring your friends too

Her: Yeah, that'd be awesome!

You: I'll text you *pull your phone out

Her: *puts in her number

You: (thru text) So are your friends cool or crazy?

After that you text back and forth a bit and then go back to talking. I find this to be a fun little part of the first meeting because its kind of weird texting someone that's right there.

Since you've already texted her when you first met you wont feel the need to "break the ice" over text anymore so you can text her whenever you feel like it. She'll also be more likely to be the one to re-engage and text you first if you do this.
