I can only answer this as a straight girl.

I've been on dates where the guy just kind of doesn't leave, and it's awkward. I have to make up some excuse usually to go, and it leaves me feeling like I want to go, aka it was a bad date.

Basically you should genuinely have a task lined up to do later that evening if it's a day thing. For example, if you have a lunch date at 12, I'd say have an hour in general minimum, so have something you could use as an excuse to go do at 1pm, ie, I am going to the gym, I'm meeting a friend, have a class, have to walk the dog, BUT make sure your excuse can extend. If it's a good date and you want to keep it going to say two hours, then do so. Still keep the excuse as your leaving reason though. A good tip is to do activities which have a natural conclusion, ie eating, coffee, a class, a pre determined walk/hike. Basically if you have something else to go and do afterwards it only makes you look more valuable and interesting to the girl, and she will value that you set time apart for her. If you just hang around she might get annoyed or bored, end it when things are going well (trust me).

The key to doing this well is realizing that you and the girl have unlimited potential/time for dates. So you will actually get to spend more time with her by effectively portioning it. Guy takes me on four hour walk- potential disaster. Guy takes me on two different two hour dates- nice and not too risky. Likely to date again.

Don't wait until she wants to leave. Be the instigator in all aspects, including ending the date. This shows you have control and power, confidence. It shows you have a life, and that you have your shit together. It's like. "I hope this guy can fit me in for lunch again even though he's also busy rescuing puppies and teaching surfing to blind children."

Yeah.
