How do I keep the conversation going with strangers?

I always regret not approaching the girl at my school. You don't wanna go over and expect something in return. Just say hi and ask her how she is doing. What class she has, make some jokes, keep it easy and fun.

If the conversation goes well and if she invests, ask her for her number, say that you can grab a coffee or something quick when you are free. Be confident, grounded and easy going. GL.

Listen, honestly. People love talking about themselves. If you can ask questions that lead to them talking more about themselves, they will do the work for you. But you have to listen if you want to pick up on what to ask next.

Ask them a few questions, about what they like, do, work, etc. Try to relate to what she said, use jokes and banter, and then go for her number.

Get them to talk about themselves as everyone loves to do that.

It is creepy, you have to build rapport first. And don't look at her until 3 seconds right before you are actuallyh going to talk to her, staring is even more creepy. Look in the right column and read the Guides, especially "Learning Pickup" and "Approach Anxiety".
