This conversation has been popping up with a friend of mine the last couple of years.

It's just good fun and you're flirting. The middle ground is just that.

You seem to take yourself seriously (which can be good or bad depending on how you exercise your social criticisms). But when it comes to women, allow your self to loosen up.

Like you said they loveeeee the BS, it's fun for them and it's fun for you too if you let it be. Women don't like being taken seriously.

Save the Nietzsche for you and your friends, girls just want to have fun man.

That is a pretty well established technique. In fact, I recall one PUA saying you should familiarize yourself with girls toys of different time periods, so you can make a good guess at what kind of toys were popular when she was young. If you had sisters, you already know what was popular when you were a kid. That is probably not a viable strategy for me, I am too old and there are too many years of toys gone past (you can't pick barbie, that is too general over decades). My sisters used to play with Mystery Date.

Rarely do girls look back on previous encounters and try to compare it to your current personality. From their perspective, you're unknown to them and they only know what you show them. Over time if they discover you're not one to use a personality test, then they'll just realize you went out of your element to talk to them, which is somewhat endearing...

I wouldn't worry too much about it. It really doesn't matter how you get the conversation rolling, as long as it gets started somehow. As she gets to know you more, she'll learn more about you.

The initial games we play are to break the ice and build rapport, you can get into the deeper more genuine stuff as you two get to know each other better.

There's a difference between doing it out of poking fun and it being central to your character. If anything the contrast to your regular character would make it even funnier. Also, being a rationalist is good and all, but seduction (and with most things in life in general) at its core transcends the rational and the real; so by adhering exclusively to rationalism, you kind of shoot yourself in the foot.

Having said that, if you still prefer to be a staunch rationalist, you could still do lots of things. Instead of making knowingly absurd or stereotypical guesses, you can practice empathy - look at her mood, energy levels, tone of voice, etc. to see how she might be feeling internally; in a conversation, you allow her to do the talking and when you respond you put yourself in her shoes, summarize her speech in your own few words, and infer what feelings she'd have associated with it. Another thing you can do (as far as cold-reading goes) is guess her recent history based on physical characteristics of her shoes, dress, etc. - Sherlock-Holmes-style; now yeah Holmes is an idealized fictional figure, but you only need guess a few things to wow her.

Oh...wait...you lost me at "detest." That's a strong hateful word and frame that will hold you back. So, you hate flirting?...that is a problem. Or just cold reading?

There ARE ways to flirt other than cold reading. You could tease and banter without it. Try getting the pickup 101 banter deck for free on pu101's site. Google will find it.
