In the context of OP's post sometimes it's as simple as saying no, let's reschedule. Recruiter calls to schedule appointment for interview, asks for availability. You say well it will have to be next week because I have ... a life.

Whatever that life is, fill in the blanks. In have interviews with your competition this week. I have something else that is important to me. You have to wait a bit if you want me, will next week work? Even if you are free as a bird sometimes you make it seem like you are busy interviewing. Sometimes you jump and take the interview right away, depending mostly on chemistry/situation.

I have to imagine its someone cooler than me doing it, then I just do what he would do. Especially at work. (I read seddit mostly to apply the head games/inner game to work). There are superstars I work with who are really smart and hard working and seem to be what we call naturals. I try to imagine what they would do, and do that. And luckily at work work with some of them I can straight up ask them.

It really helps wirh shittests from the boss. "Would you do this bullshit assignment?" Well if I say yes I'm a pushover and I'll get all the bullshit. If I say no I'm uncooperative and not seen as productive. If I just nail it, that's a win, but its bullshit so it may be harder than it looks and none of that effort will be respected - it's all "cost" and if it cost anything more than expected its a big loss.... Shit. What do?

Well, what would highly respected senior coworker do?

He would not say yes it no. He would explain the costs as he sees it and explain the tradeoffs as well. If I do x and it takes the time we expect, I can't do y. If I do x and it is more difficult than we expect, I can't do y or z. How important is x? Is it more important than y or z?

Here you have to be careful to not let him take away y and give it to your competition. I'm already invested in y and z and want to continue with those while I have momentum. I can do x on top, if it is what I think it is, but if it is larger we should revisit as the cost/benefit is not what we originally expected. Let me investigate and we can discuss what I find.

I would have probably just taken x and tried to do it fast and let it derail the more important y, but the person I'm thinking of never would do that. So by thinking about what he would do, I was able to come up with the right approach.

Sometime you gotta emulate those who have it figured out.
