I'd be very careful about equating being bummed out because a girl won't date you to having clinical depression. Depression takes away all motivation to do almost anything, and makes you tired all the time, which in turn forces you lower and lower to the point of no return. This should be helped by actual an therapist and or medication (usually both).

Some conditions aren't intended by nature for you to improve. Cancer, Aids, Brittle Bone Disease, Depression. These are diseases that shouldn't motivate us to "become better people", they should be treated as what they really are, diseases.

True but if you're really in mental anguish it is little comfort to say this is for your own good, often the suffering is pointless and lowering your self esteem - making your problems worse.

I used CBT to analyse my thoughts and feelings and worked out which were rational and which were irrational. This takes time and sustained effort.

Maaaaybe. I do know that heartbreak made me into an emotional fortress. I go out and have fun and make intimate connections, but I'm never vulnerable again.
