I read through MFA and a lot of that doesn't fit me as a person - but I still took away from it.

Well fitted and well cut clothing. Stuff that gives you definition, whether you're slim or a bit bigger like I am

So I bought some plain v-neck t shirts in 2xl instead of regular shirts in 3xl. I love the way they fit, and the cut on the collar allows the tattoo on my chest to peek out just a little bit. I find it to give me quite an improvement in how I feel I look.

Jeans, button fly, with a little bit slimmer leg and shorter in the crotch (can't think of the technical term for that cut area) give good definition as well.

As for the rest, I'll stick with my DC shoes and faded looking wide strap leather belt.

Probably doesn't even answer your question...just sharing my experience with MFA.

Fitted/slim/modern fit (it varies by brand, it's all the same thing) clothing if it fits your physique is a good start. Button downs, and dress pants.

I like to look for clothes that feel good. Because once a woman knows your clothes feel awesome, she won't be able to keep her hands off of you! I recommend Banana Republic's fitted pima cotton polos for this - they are super soft and feel awesome.

Don't worry about what women think of your clothes. If you know it looks good, they will be impressed. Find yourself a decent watch - it doesn't have to be expensive. Kenneth Cole makes nice watches at a decent price ($50-$80). I got one for Christmas two years ago that I still get compliments on. I'm currently looking for a cool ring for my other hand. The watch is good on one side but my other hand seems bare...because it is. Also a cool necklace of some kind. If you unbutton the top two buttons when you go out, that spot looks bare.

Get some decent dress shoes (Kenneth Cole, Calvin Klein, Rockport all tend to be pretty good). Avoid box toes (looks like this || ) while a regular round toe (like a wingtip) is ok. I prefer chisel toe myself ( \/) but not the really long kind. Shoes should just about fit your feet, not make you look like the Wicked Witch of the West after the house landed on her.

Find colors that all go together and layer. For example, my go-to summer outfits are tan shorts with a maroon/purple t-shirt and a grey button down military t-shirt (two chest pockets with collar), or navy blue shorts with a light blue shirt and the same grey shirt. I wear prescription glasses / sunglasses, so those pockets are great to hold whichever pair I'm not currently wearing. And it looks good!

I've read that wearing different shades of the same color gives you a more relaxed look, which is great for summer. I also like to wear undershirts that complement a shirt I'm wearing out. If the button down has stripes of a certain color, wear a shirt that color, or something similar, underneath it. Don't wear a shirt the color of the biggest strips - it can be too much.

I dress business casual for work, which I suppose you would refer to as suburban Dad (Thanks!) lol. Like I said before, go with the fitted clothes if you can. Regular fit tends to be for bigger guys. Get flat front pants (pleats are kind of for dudes with huge legs / fat guys and make you look old / like you have huge hips). It looks horrible if you're skinny. Make sure the clothes fit but aren't super tight in the waist / crotch - Dockers D1 Slim Fit is great, but runs small - I'm usually a 30/30 and had to get a 31/30 so the front didn't pull at the zipper.

Also important: try not to dress like 90% of the other guys out there. The below website will help with that. You don't have to dress crazy, but most guys just don't bother with different colors / styles.

Check out The Effortless Gent website. That guy has tons of infographics on what to wear / what not to wear, what colors complement your skin tone, etc. It's great! I have a bunch of them posted on my wall.

I recently upgraded my outfit. It used to be baggy tshirts, baggy jeans or cargo pants, hiking boots, maybe wear a too-large button up as a sort of jacket. Couple that with too much weight and a bad haircut and I'm no longer surprised I've never had any sort of "luck" with girls.

Now, my outfit consists of brown leather Bushacre chukkas, dark blue 514s or khaki Dockers chinos, and a striped or tartan button up with a sweater over it & a peacoat if it's cold enough out. It's kind of a preppy/academic look, and I'm trying to move it towards more of an indie look with some flannels, more tapered & colorful pants, vests, scarves, etc. but I've had maybe a half-dozen girls and a couple of guys just randomly compliment me on it.

It feels good to put effort into dressing well. Professors give me more respect, people remember my name, girls smile at me, people hold doors open for me when I'm fifteen or twenty feet away, when you're well dressed you don't bump into people; they bump into you.

Been stated here already, but the close-fitting-while-still-not-skinny is the way to go. For denim, Levi's just recently introduced their 508 line (iirc, the number might've been 513 also... either way, whichever one was the tapered fit) that's really good. Take a look at those, and use that basic fit/shape to find other denims too.

For upper body garb, I recommend/wear a mix of v-necks and regular t-shirts. The key here is to make sure that whatever you wear, that it looks clean, crisp (I'm not talking like ironing or whatever here, just the way you rock it, I guess) and fresh. Hate sounding cliche, but yeah, that's what it is. Avoid graphic tees unless they're small/simple designs. I have one that I consistently get compliments on, a guy smoking & breathing out a galaxy (you've probably seen that design somewhere, it's quite popular).

Mostly t-shirts can rock the pictures/designs well; v-necks, you should go for the simple, solid colors, or a light horizontal stripe design. Light as in the density of the stripes, not colors - whatever suits your skin/body best is the basis for colors. The sleeves shouldn't go past your elbows, especially for v-necks. And even if you're not buff, a slightly tight sleeve opening does wonders for your appearance when compared to a loose one.

Accessories - Personally, I don't wear a watch or a necklace. My rule with that is to look in a mirror and try it - if it complements your appearance, hell yes. If not, it's all good. On occasion, I'll wear a small unobtrusive black rubber wristband, and it's a subtle addition that works, or a G-Shock, depending on the outfit. As a college student, it's not out of place, but if you're an adult with adult responsibilites/in bars, that might not be a good idea, and a watch (but probably not a G-Shock) would be better.

MFA can be useful, but they tend to cluster around a certain style, which not all of us appreciate. However, there are some useful lessons in there. As others have said, fit is really important. And above all, style is your own. So make it your own.

Mystery was a big proponent of "peacock theory" and sticking out of the crowd, and I've heard other people attest to this. I try it a little bit, but not to the extent of some others. I have a cool Native American piece I wear around my neck, it's unique enough that I tend to get a lot of questions about it--which is awesome, because if someone wants to talk to me, I'm giving them something to talk about. I also always wear a watch, because it is an easy way to class up an outfit (it's actually nice to not have to look at your phone for the time, too).

What I tend to focus on as far as dressing up is being better dressed than the average guy. This will vary depend on the venue you're going to, but the nice thing about most guys is they don't put enough effort into how they look. So as long as you have more than a striped shirt and average jeans, you'll be at least better than average.

Now, in the interest of not being too vague, I'll give a few more examples of what I wear out, so long as you remember to wear what fits your style and what you feel comfortable in.

I find jackets a really nice addition to the wardrobe. Wearing a nice jacket allows for less effort in the shirt department. A lot of times I just wear a v-neck or crew t-shirt and my jacket on top. A bonus: two of the jackets I wear out have buttons/zippers on the sleeves, so that I can roll them up if I get hot.

A decent pair of jeans can go a long way towards dressing better. I find Levi's is a good brand for good options with fit, material, and price (if you're in the U.S., that is). I also have a couple pairs from Guess, which are nice, but a little pricier.

Wearing dress shoes are a nice way to stand out among a crowd of sneakers, no matter what bar you're going to. I find it's helpful to dress in a way that's passable to get into a club, even if you don't plan on going to one, because then you'll be better dressed than most of the people there, and you'll be prepared in the event of a venue change (I once wore shorts instead of jeans because it was a little hot out--never again).

Recently, I was at a nicer bar downtown and wore a blazer with jeans for the dressy/casual look. What turned out to be golden about this look was a tie with a matching pocket square. I was with a few friends, who started the joke that I was running for political office of some sort, and the joke followed me wherever I went. It was great.

At a club, I wore dress shirt, tie, and vest. After some dancing, I was hot as fuck, and sweating, which a girl I was dancing with mentioned. Felt a little self-conscious, and mentioned that maybe I should have left the vest at home, but she said, "No. Keep it." Try not to get sweaty, but hey, even dressing the part can compensate for other failings.

I find a vest in general to be a nice investment. It's another thing you can wear over a nice t-shirt and all of a sudden be dressy/casual. It also looks really good over dress shirts, if you want to go all out.

i dress like a business man because i am one , so an expensive shirt from a shop where the staff help you make a good choice, black pants, and expensive shoes, it works well at clubs and cocktail bars

If what you see is a lot of "khakis", polos, and button-downs recommended on MFA then you missed something.
