I've dated many cashiers and waitress's; most people will tell you they're not into you and paid to be nice etc; never let that stop you. First off have the attitude that they are lucky to be talking to you (just for confidence). I find establishing higher value works very well, prove you are smarter and more interesting than all her other customers; ask for her opinion on a really interesting topic, something to do with psychology, relationships, whatever gets her interest. Cashiers can be really tricky, but totally doable. Use the time constraint to your advantage, the line I used was "Hey, I gotta go, this is such an interesting conversation though, so write your number down on my receipt so we finish it over coffee".

I'm not exclusively talking about "hired guns"

but any girl hired for their looks or not.

Time constraints are logistical problems, and need to be worked around.

You can come back when there's no line, or simply tell her you'd love to talk to her on her break.

I'll be following this thread very carefully since my current approach to this is: just surpressing my attraction to them as hard as I can and moving on because between the logistic and the fact that they are paid to be nice and each interaction can only go in short 'bursts', chances are so low something will actually come out of it.

But I see that there is room for improvement here, so fellow sedditors please share your wisdom! :-)

Saw this happen at work recently from a customer - a random customer came up and the first things he said to the server was "Hey, how are you/You look really pretty today." This caught the server off guard but definitely in a good way, she got really happy and giggily, which I rarely ever see, and for the next 5 minutes she had a huge grin on her face.

Do it, little things like that makes people's day.

If things start getting awkward just pay and peace out. Never see her again.

I don't approach staff at places where I frequent, you're asking for trouble that way.

I mean, go up to her and make idle chat, game is game man. To figure out if she's really into you, as with all girls you have to escalate. In the case of a book store you have to just get the number and schedule a date because the public place and the counter might physically stop you from making moves. In situations where you can isolate the girl, hug and try to kiss her. EDIT: Sorry for starting with prepositions, I'm lazy.
