Is this a career job or just a temporary gig? There's an old saying that you should never dip your pen in the company ink. Could lead for an incredibly uncomfortable work situation. I think your only angle is to try to befriend her, and maybe she can introduce you to some of her cute friends (this is potentially dicey, too).

Probably not what you were looking to hear, but in my opinion keep it friendly and non-sexual.

First things first I'd say check your office / employee manual for any guidance on intra-office dating. There is no attraction worth losing a job / career over in this economy.

If that presents no hurdles, I'd say that your instincts on making progress are probably correct. Go for it, and good luck.

Instead of asking her flat out on a date, if your company does a happy hour, you could invite her to join you for one of those. It's a pretty easy way of judging her interest in you without really laying out all of your cards. If she says yes, then great, that's a positive development and you can chat her up at the happy hour and get her number there. If she says no, then you can say something about wanting to get to know her better and find out when she's free or if she'd like to meet you for a drink another night. That's how I'd go about it.

Try and pass by her desk naturally, and say hello. Bring up a conversation about what happened the other day, thanking her, and moving onto small talk about what you did before in relation to jokes and such. Don't be too forceful, just eventually try and get to know her better, while still giving her eye contact, looks and smiles from your desk like you normally did before without creeping her out. If all goes well and you befriend her, ask her out somewhere she's wanted to go in town or if she's hungry grab a bite to eat. You could always ask: "What are you doing after work?" And that can lead on to either you asking her to do something with you, or respond with what you were going to normally do after you finish work.

Just remember she's in the office, so you don't want to make things awkward. If she seems like she's struggling with something, offer to help. If you require something and it doesn't look blatantly obvious that you want her to help you, you can always go up and ask to see if she could spend five minutes like before finding a file or whatever. Just don't move too fast and play it cool. Also look out for office "happy hour" things and invite her, (if she says she doesn't like going to something like that, ask her if you could do something with her instead if she was free) and as russlo said, you should probably check the offlice/employee manual for intra-office dating. You don't anything to get complicated. I'm sure she's also thought about that before, and wouldn't want to ruin her career if she ended up dating you (or someone else).

Don't be too stressed if it doesn't work out. Just try and have some fun, get to know her better and see where it goes from there :)
