Let their imaginations run wild. Give them the "If I told you I'd have to kill you" line. Better yet, make up a convincing cover story that would justify traveling and long hours (international business, etc.), then reel them in by explaining later that "That's just my cover. I have to tell that to everyone. In fact, I work for the government." You don't have to give them any more details than that, but having a cover story that you later deliberately blow makes you seem mysterious and interesting.

Dude, I work for the government. It's not as serious as they make it out to be. Just say you work for the government but don't go into specifics, you could be a janitor for all they know.
