Hey, I'm looking for a male opinion, here: I know many of you are against routines, but can someone play Devil's Advocate in favor of routines? (I.e., why/when are routines good?)

Routines are good, assuming the routine content is good. Using the same material repeatedly helps you assess the set and your delivery. If you practice delivering the same material over and over, you start to refine your delivery, you see how people react and you can see where the rough spots are, and what you can improve. At that point, since the material is well tested and you are well practiced, you can start to see how much of the reaction is due to the woman's state, instead of your crappy delivery.

I'll give a weird example. I worked a job where I processed forms, people stood in line all day long and I'd deliver the same basic script. Can I have your last name? First name? Ok now sign this form.. blah blah. And it went on like that for days on end. As I delivered this script repeatedly, I found out that I was speaking too quickly (trying to rush through it) and people were put off, also my tone of voice became unpleasant as I got tired. So I worked gradually on my tone, and spoke a little slower (and even a bit lower volume) and people paid more attention, the job processing each person's forms got done faster, and women were even flirting back to me (with no provocation).

I'm a firm believer that everyone should have some stories that they have told many many times.

Pros for routines

You have told the story many times, so you both A, can focus on delivery, and B, should have the delivery really down pat.
It can free up your mind to think about other shit like logistics.
You always have a back up thing to say if conversation is stalling.
You can count on it to generally have a certain reaction.

Basically what Throwaway said. Routines can be great, but that's assuming you've pretty much mastered the delivery, know how to use them in the right contexts, and know how to follow up. They're also great for the learning process.

The big part of what makes routines "bad" (at least in terms of how they're used) is you can't write a script for an interaction before it takes place. Unless you're Mystery and have a crazy memory for shit like that, you're pretty much gonna be bouncing from routine to routine without much of a "strategy." And it'll especially suck when you have to move away from that and start going off-the-cuff (unless you're already good at that too).

If you're not doing the shit I said above, knowing some routines can be awesome. Or if you have a memory like Mystery's, hell, you could potentially have an entire interaction based on scripted shit you've memorized, if that's your prerogative. Most guys can't really do that though- you kinda need to know how to go with the flow, and routines tend to divert from that whole concept of interaction.

I enjoy routines, personally I use routines when they are functional or situational. I usually use a routine to get a girl to come to my side of the dinner table at a restaurant. I typically make a bet with her then ask her to answer a logic puzzle or trick question. Usually they get really into this and keep asking me for more so I make more bets for stuff like, a kiss on the cheek, a backrub, pay for my dinner, etc.

It's also great to have a few situational stories / jokes you can tell. The key is to use them when the conversation leads you to them. For example when a girl orders wieners at a restaurant I usually tell a joke about Michael Jackson:

"Hey btw, did you hear how Michael Jackson really died?"

"No, how?"

"In a news report the other day they said it was because he ate a 5 year old wiener." (drumroll)

These are great practice for story telling in general, which is a useful skill to have in seduction.
