I immediately lose most interest if a friend of mine wants it. I think I have two reasons for this:

I like my friends and to most of them getting the girl would be a bigger deal than for me.
I do not like openly competing over a girl with strangers, let alone friends.

Talk to him about it. If he doesn't have a problem with it, keep doing what you're doing. If he does, stop. Simple.

We often go for the same girl with my friends, but it is all good fun. I mean it's just like a fun competition and as soon as one man closes the others back down. No hurt feelings at all.

I feel the same way around a particular friend of mine, especially because we have similar taste in women and all the girls he hangs out with are definitely my type/pretty chill. He's had way more relationships/SO's than I have, and got laid more times than me, but I feel I'm smoother and more social than he is.

Here's the way I see it:

It's good practice, especially if you already have a FWB/SO. If you're single as well, then you might lay off a bit or just play uninterested to help your buddy out. Hell, even encourage him or talk to the girl on his behalf (tread lightly on this one). But again, I see it as good practice (for me at least) because nothing will usually happen, so I don't really care how it goes. A flawed mindset, perhaps, but again it works for me.
If he brings it up, ask him how he feels about it. If he doesn't care, keep it up. If he does, if you value him as a true friend, knock it off.

Absolutely! There are plenty of women that you can sleep with. At the same time you need social validation, and what's better than a buddy who knows you respect his ... life ... and a girl who has a 1/2 crush on you and who has witnessed first hand that you are indeed a gentleman?

And, just like mariodood suggested, teach him a few things about flirting in general, so that you can be each other's wingman.
