Come back when they're not busy. Be a regular.

Waitresses get hit on enough, cashiers hate being busy and don't want to chat.

Make a note that there was somebody cute and go back when you expect the demand to die down.

I find that if I make subtle little jokes the first few times I visit an establishment, eventually they start opening you. I always act surprised like the idea never hit me before when I ask them out because you were just casually chatting about something.. but since you've spent a few weeks building a rapport, they feel comfortable when you say, "yeah I'm getting a pumpkin to carve later... have you made one yet..?"

I just don't like hitting on girls that are working. My friends are always egging me on to get their number, but I just find it too weird. I can't explain it, but it's just weird to me.

I've found most girls find it creepy to be hit on while they are at work. The reason they feel this way is because if you hit on her off of the clock, she can simply ignore you and/or walk away. If you hit on her at the job she is essentially trapped there and forced to be nice to you (the customer).

Be good looking and stand out. Well that's obvious.

Honestly just keep the conversation going outside of your typical order or your typical day. Wish them a happy Monday, make them laugh, comment on the rude customers in front of you, just don't stalk or frequent a place so you can build up the courage to stutter a forced conversation while the girl can't be overtly rude to you because she's at work.

Why would you?

For each barista at starbucks there are at least 10 HBs who come into the same starbucks every 15 minutes or so.

Good looking extrovert baristas are friendly to you partly because is what they are, and partly because of their job; so... don't hit on them, chances are you are misunderstanding the situation.

Keep it short, keep it sweet, go for a number. Simple. Hit on them outside of work, not while they're working.
