If she really does look like someone, she's probably heard it before, probably again and again until she's irritated by it. Or maybe it's just the usual problem, you shouldn't give girls compliments on their beauty. Or there are other reasons, I met one readhead and I had to bite my tongue not to tell her she looked just like Audrey Hollander. Oh I could just see the reaction I would get if I told her she looked like a famous porn star.

But you can still tease them, maybe just don't do it on looks, she just reminds you of someone. "Hey you remind me of my aunt Eleanor. I'm going to call you Eleanor from now on."

Oh god this is just what I didn't need to see because I did just this the other night. First date was going well and towards the end I told her she reminds me of my sister and it got a little awkward after that. Is this salvageable or is it ruined

I can confirm this, even if it's a hot person, just don't do it. Ever. It never ends well.

From memory the only time I can remember saying someone looked like somebody or something is when I'm teasing them.

And I'm still going to do it because it entertains me. If I'm not having fun, how can I expect the people I interact with to have fun either?

I've told girls they look like someone before. It's often failed for me. The times it failed were generally like this,

"Hey, you look like my friend sally."

"OMG! I hate that girl so much! How could you say that! She's such a bitch..."

When it's worked it went like this,

"Do people ever tell you how you look like someone."

"No."

"Really because you look so much like Zooey Deschanel."

"Wow, she's so pretty. Thanks!"

Or, if I think she's heard it a million times,

"When random guys come up to you and say you look just like ... Who is it?"

"Sarah Jessica Parker"

"Yeah, do you ever get tired of it?"

It can work if you say she reminds you or looks like a family member such as your sister or cousin who you have had a lot of fun time with. Makes her comfortable.
