Do you mean using the word girlfriend in a story? Like "Yeah a year ago when I was traveling through Austin with my girlfriend...". If you are telling a story about you and an ex-girlfriend, and you are early in the interaction, I think it is fine to say girlfriend and then correct yourself later on if she asks about it.

This is not okay

Making up a relationship or fabricating a fake girlfriend.

If you are doing the latter, mind sharing why? What are you trying to accomplish? There's probably a better way to accomplish the same thing and you could do it without compromising your integrity by lying.
