Usually handshake for first time, then hugs for the next.

It depends on the culture. In London there are loads of Europeans , so I go for the kiss on each cheek. It's an accepted norm after meeting a girl, even the first time.

However, if I were to do that in New Zealand where I'm from, I would get weird looks. I just do it anyway and claim it's a European thing and play on it and joke about how cultured I am now etc.

To be on the safe side with girls you aren't super comfortable around, e.g. if its a girl that isn't a friend of a friend, then go for the handshake. Depending on how well you interacted with her after that first meeting, do whatever feels natural on subsequent interactions.

I'll hug girls that I know really well.

If the girl is from a Western/Southern European country, I'll kiss her on the cheek/both cheeks the appropriate number of times (depends on the culture).

Otherwise it's a handshake.

This is cultural and has a lot to do with how you carry yourself/your identity in general. I lived in France for a while and in meeting new Girls through friends they EXPECT a kiss on both cheeks. But it's really like a "Mwah." I was uncomfortable at first bc I wasn't sure if you did it to all girls/women.. You do. I thought this was so cool and a great ice-breaker. Meet a group of like 6 girls and get some close-face-time ;). In America, a handshake is a safe bet. But I make it firm and look them in the eye and say their name with intention. When leaving, if I like them or we hit it off but no "closes" I'll go for a hug or even a cheek kiss.

In the "South," or southern US, a kiss on the cheek is the accepted norm, young or old.

It depends on the vibe. If she seems super shy and reserved, keep it simple with a handshake. Other times if she seems super warm, I'll just pull her in for a hug and a kiss on one cheek.

Handshake when we first meet, and, if the environment is right and I'm feeling "in state", sometimes I'll jokingly kiss her hand.
