I haven't been posting here for a while because I have been out practicing my “moves” and working on making my life something I am content with (honestly, this is the best way to overcome your AA. If you are proud of your life then you will not be ashamed to share it with someone else). This has worked surprisingly well. I have a job I genuinely enjoy, and some close friends who know how to have a good time. That being said, I was invited out to a house party by an old acquaintance.
I was never particularly close with this girl, we grew up in the same neighborhood and had a lot of the same friends. Considering I didn't know most of the people who were going (fb invite stalking) I figured it would be good to take a wingman and have a good time catching up. Only problem is my wingman bailed last minute with a family emergency (he's a close friend so no problems there) but I told him not to sweat it. The prospect of me going solo to this party, I'll admit, was a little nerve wrecking. It's something I have never done before. But here I was with a 12-pack in the car driving to the house in a halloween costume.
I get to the house and immediately say, “hi” to the first person I meet. Got the beer in the fridge and find my old friend to give me social credibility. Most of the people there took good care of their looks and approaching was easy considering everyone was in costume.
I made it a point to try to meet everyone in the party so that I could remain aloof if the conversation became stale. Also, I didn't want to look clingy. I met my objective and had introduced myself to all but 3 or 4 people who were very standoffish. (Why bother with people who are not going to be fun to talk to?) Considering I love my job and am starting to be successful with my other hobbies and endeavors, I talked about those subjects most with people because I could easily come off as passionate about my undertakings.
I asked what other people do as well, made jokes and sarcastic comments whenever possible to keep the mood light. It was loud as only a house party could be so for kino my go to was leaning in, hand on the back of the shoulder, and having the person repeat what they said in my ear (really, I didn't over use this. That would be annoying). But I couldn't get a connection with anyone. At least not one which I would consider asking for a number or go in for a kiss.
That was what was weird about this whole night. I am usually able to create those closer connections with people to have a great night. I walked away from the party unsatisfied, not because I hadn't put myself out there, but because I hadn't been able to create a connection with anyone. I was always the one to initiate the conversation, even at the end of the night when people knew who I was. This sounds kind of selfish, but even if one person came up and initiated, I would have felt better about the whole night.
Lastly, I guess I should add, this whole time I was outcome independent. Like I said earlier, my only goal was to talk to every person at that party which I accomplished. So seddit, what is your take on what happened? Have any of you had the same experience?
