Don't shrug off the less attractive girl. She's an easy opportunity to show that you can be a fun dancing partner. Grab her, give her a playful spin or two, and now you can join their circle and dance with any of them.
I've never seen or heard of girls rejecting a invitation to dance from a guy after he's danced with one of their less-hot friends.
+dance with multiple girls
If you dance with multiple girls in a group and everyone has fun, you kind of "own that group" and they'll keep coming back to you as few guys are likely to be as fun and playful as you were that night.
+focus on less attractive
If you focus a bit more initial energy on the less attractive friends the more attractive friends will be more intrigued and interested in you (because they want what they can't have).

Sure, if this happens again next Saturday I'll try to turn around, give the least attractive girl a spin and see how it goes from there. However if they push a fat/ugly girl I'm not sure that I'll be that willing to cooperate haha

Correct, you shouldn't approach from behind. That creeps women out.
Never ask women to dance. Just dance in front of her and see how she reacts. If she turns away from you, you have no chance. If she stays there, grab her hand and dance with her. If she pulls away, you have no chance. Repeat this process until you find a woman to dance with.
About escalation, you escalate WHILE dancing. Not after dancing.
Btw, only talk when she asks you something. You should dance and escalate. No talking. Talking is for in a bar. Dancing is for dance floors.
Yeah I agree with you. I don't understand guys who try to pick up girls by talking to them for around 5-10 minutes and then expecting a makeout session-it's a club! People want to dance and have fun, not tell you their life story. And besides it's usually way too loud in clubs to hear a damn thing.
Hmm looks like I'm gonna have to experiment a bit with the asking permission to dance part. I've read other posts here that say that you should always hold out your hand and ask, while others say just grab her hand and go for it (sounds more alpha to me), just as you suggested.
So what should I do when they're practically almost touching my dick? Some do end up dancing in front of me by accident, but in others I sense that they do it deliberately. I wouldn't start grinding on them, so what should I do when they have their back towards me? Should I attempt to go round, establish eye contact and other IOIs and then approach? This seems to be a situation that I find myself a lot into...

"so what should I do when they have their back towards me?"
Just move a little so you can approach her from the front. There's only one situation where you can approach from behind and that's when a woman go to you and start grinding against you.

RSD has a great video on this: http://youtu.be/kd3Rs9FxguA
Dance floor game is interesting. Best part about it girls don't give a shit how well you dance. They care about how much fun you're having.
When I hit the dance floor I move around a lot. Have it be in the bar or some concert. And interact with everyone!
Example once I hit this club once with this girl I went on a date with. She was being a bit distant and danced with another guy. Instead of being a little bitch about it. I made eye contact with everyone and had fun.
During this there was a huge group of hb8-9 next to me. Guys were trying to creepy dance next to them. As I was groove one girl made eye contact with me and copy my gesture, so I did it back to you. And scream oh dance battle! She comes up and we stand having a awful dance battle. At this point her friends stop and start to watch. Those guys stopped and wonder who the fuck I was. Then the rest of the club wondering what the fuck was going on stopped at watched. She smile hugged me and told me I was awesome.
After this my date was all over me. Later found out that girl had a guy there who was mad about me as my date told me. Once you don't give a fuck. Everyone has a great time.
Any gestures that are easily copy-able once you've established eye contact, or do you just do random shit that they happen to reciprocate? Usually when I look at them, they look, smile back and break eye contact immediately. Then our eyes might meet again later. (Even as I type this, I have a pretty good feeling that she was giving me the all clear to approach- if only I realized at that time!)
Yeah I had watched Tyler's video before. Basically that was the video that convinced me to dance, soak up the club's energy and not actually give a fuck. As you've said, girls don't really care about the actual dancing, but it's like telling them, "Hey! I'm fun and I don't need to depend on girls to make my night fun!" So they end up being intrigued and come close to me to try and get in on some of my fun. Seriously I wish that I had learned this earlier in life, since I've actually started to enjoy clubbing because of it. (and not see it as some sort of dreadful lottery in which I'd try to get lucky)
Also, should I be moving around the club? Normally I establish a "base" in the middle of the crowded dancefloor and just let loose. I've found that this works much better for me than running laps around the club, trying to push past people. (and besides the former is more fun imo!)

When on the dancefloor, I like to pretend it doesn't exist and head straight for the girl I like, then talk to her like I would anywhere else. If you commit to this it work wonders. I'm sure someone in here will give you some good high energy party advice though.
EDIT: Give this a try before you knock it, the idea is to make the environment react on your terms, rather than the other way around. It's harder for a newbie to pull off.
