Are you ever satisfied?

I look at it like this: a person should never be satisfied with the amount of knowledge they have; you should never stop learning. You shouldn't be satisfied with the amount of traveling you've done, or the books you've read, or the movies you've seen, or the songs you've listened to; you should always want to keep accumulating experiences. So why should I be satisfied by the idea of being with just one woman for the rest of my life? Why is monogamy somehow this great idea that isn't open to criticism?

I say fuck being satisfied. The day grow contented is the day I stagnate as a person.

One of my favorite teachers once said something along the lines of "Happiness is an emotion. Emotions are by definition temporary. You can't be happy all the time, it's just impossible. What you should try to be is content. I'm content with my life with my family."

I think its very true. However I think there are people in this world who just aren't meant to be content. Content people get a job, a family, and they stop. They aren't necessarily stagnating, but they aren't the constantly growing person they were in their 20's. I've never been content with anything and I think it's going to force me to make something of myself. I'm happy a lot, but I'm never content. And I'm thankful for that.

I believe a man should always be yearning and striving for self-improvement in every area of his life, while at the same time understanding the fragility and impermanence of the things he's already accomplished.

What I mean is, work your ass off, but don't forget to give yourself credit where it's due and be content with what you've achieved. People who shift this balance too dramatically are the ones who become lazy or power-hungry.
