They do sound awkward, and they will be awkward. The only way to make them not awkward is experience.

Be comfortable with yourself and the environment. Nothing is awkward if everyone is relax and open. Make contact early on and be physically with people around you.

Usually they work quite organically when you're laughing or appreciating something she said ("oh my god I have the exact same thing" / "You're right, too true").

Like everything else it's a question of habit. If you're confident and used to it it'll happen without you even making a conscious effort to do it. If you're having trouble though there's a lot of easy ways to cheat and fake it till you make it.

Pointing something out to her is the easiest and you can get so much physical contact out of it. One arm around her turning her around to face what you're pointing at, one hand holding her hand to make her point at it too, learn into her so your eyesight is aligned with hers.

Then there's lots of games you can play (whose hand is bigger, thumb wrestling) and lots of hand gestures that happen as part of the conversation and build intimacy (pinkie promise, high five, etc).

Finally I find it much easier to kino right as I meet a girl (this is more applicable to a pre-arranged date than hitting on some stranger in the street). I tell myself exactly what I'm going to do when I meet her like that I don't have to think about it, it happens just as we're saying "hi". "You look great, give me a spin", spin her around, give her a hug, then keep your arm around her or your hand in her hand as you start walking. Sets the frame and makes it much easier for later.

It's like when a woman laughs and puts her hand on your arm. It's nice and not awkward at all; just a physical extension of the conversation.

Think about it like this, when you and your buddies are hanging out, chilling, shooting the shit, and one of your buddies cracks a nice joke, don't you reach out and pat him on the back or on the arm? Same deal with girls, except do it a bit lighter.
