Well, yes, of course it is. My point was that a lot of people think that the sub just takes it, but in the end, in order to create an environment that's safe and effective, the sub has the ultimate say in whether something happens or doesn't happen. That's the whole point of safewords—no judgment, no second-guessing. The sub says the safeword and all action stops, no questions asked.

I'm not sure what you mean by "if you know what to look for"

Selfish people make lousy doms. Because they think it's all about them. But you can't be a good dom if all you think about is yourself. Yes, the sub gets pleasure out of you taking what you want from them, but in the end, it's your responsibility to be a good dom by knowing what the sub needs and fulfilling that. It's like being a good parent—the kids are your responsibility, and you know what's best for them, so you know that while they may not always get what they want, you'll always ensure that they have what they need.
