I have been solo gaming my way through high school so far, so i may not be giving the best advice, but usually if i dont have a friend on me, which i rarely do, i will try to approach people who are alone and bring up something that they are doing or wearing or whatever and just jump start the conversation then go through with your basic game.

go somewhere related to that subject and then talk to women there. They will have more in common with you than other places and perhaps you will get lucky.
