From a documentary I saw earlier this year, chivalry was made up mostly by bards and poets first, then adopted by the upper class as a romantic notion. I think it was from Youtube, so search that.

The dirty little secret was, sexuality was much more accepted in the Middle Ages than it is now in America. And some of the bard tales were actually quite bawdy and graphic. But history books won't print that.

The Chivalric Code actually had a set of rules for a man "kidnapping" a woman if he loved her. Though this was mostly for show.
