Your best bet is to find a Salsa or Ballroom club nearby. Most of them will have a free lesson night. It's not club dancing, but you'll learn a ton about leading and "feeling the music". And leading is what it's all about.

Think of it this way -- just about every great rock guitarist (Randy Rhodes, Eric Johnson, Cliff Burton, etc) was classically trained.

I find it useful to say very little or nothing at all while practicing dancefloor game. You get to see in action how body language is more important. I've found there's either the sexy-confident or fun-confident approach.

sexy-confident example: eye contact, smirk, walk up and/or motion her to come to you, grab her hand and pull into you (resting your hand on her hip) or move her so her back is against your front (aka, her ass is on your crotch) (then place hand on her hip and/or shoulder/collarbone). Move your hips slightly based on the music, but don't over do it. In this rare case, let her lead...she's grinding on your cock so relax, move subtly, and enjoy the beat. If you're facing her front, then have a leg between hers and pull her body close to you. Have that hand on her hip travel south. They're essentially dry humping you...although not dry for long.

fun-confident example: Amuse yourself. Grab her hand, raise it up, and twist it like you want her to spin. She will. Then give her shit for spinning--it's not a ballroom...then get into the sexy-confident dancing like I described above.

Also fun: shitty fake-salsa dancing if there's room for it...then get into the sexy-confident dancing. Another one of my favorites, is the reverse ass grind. Basically you grind your ass on theirs. It's unexpected, especially if it's your approach and haven't made eyecontact with her, then quickly turn laugh when she gets startled. It fails often, but it's good fun. When it gets a positive response, you know you're in. You can throw it in early on before the sexy-shit, grind her front and get a good grip of her ass and pull her into you. It sounds weird, and looks weird I'm sure, but at the same time, it catches her off guard and allows you to escalate very quickly. Then switch to sexy-confident dancing.

I've done this to those female tribal circles. Ah yes, don't forget to isolate your girl if she was in one of those. I've found it useful to dance with a few of the others in the circle group a bit as well, and then return to the one I want. Then isolate. It might be useful to get her off the dance floor if her friends are hawking. Then escalate, keeping in mind her ass was just grinding on you.

If you find your rhythm is off, don't move much and let her work the magic. If you can't stand dancing long, or are really awful, escalate and isolate. Rush for a makeout. If she doesn't want to just yet, separate, while still holding her hand. Dance apart. Eyefuck her. Then bring her in--her front on yours, leg between hers. Pull her close. Yeah, she'll be ready to kiss you.

edit: Ah yeah, literally picking girls up. This is fun. You can spin them a bit too. I've picked a girl up and was surprised at how heavy she was. This is when I realized I was very, very drunk. Also, while very, very drunk, I've dropped girls. Only two or three times though... Beer in her hair, bruises, yeah. It's hard to recover from that (but it's possible).

Learning to dance 101

Step 1: Go to beginner's workshops for lots of different dance styles. I recommend trying Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba, Tango, East Coast Swing, Dance Hall and Foxtrot.

Step 2: Sign up for a beginner's course in one of the dance styles. I recommend a style for couples that is newbie friendly and fairly versatile, for example Bachata or East Coast Swing. Tango is probably the most difficult, but you'll learn the mindset you need to lead a dance very well, and your dance body language will improve hugely. But as I said, go for something simpler and more lively to begin with. Learn to feel the music, and when you listen to music alone, no matter what style, learn to pick out the rythm and how to predict hook points in any music. If you can act upon hook points in music when dancing, girls will think you're soooooooo talentend and musical.

Step 3: Once you know the basics of one or two styles, practice moves from those dances solo, to other kinds of music. For example, body disassociation moves in Bachata lend themselves very well for solo dancing on club dance floors, and you'll learn how to dance very intimately, and you'll get the confidence to do it. Seriously, my solo Bachata style moves make me a fucking magnet for chicks on the dance floor. While solo dancing with discrete Bachata moves, you can also throw in simple leads to the chicks you're dancing with, like simple spins or dips.

Step 4: Attend a course in some solo dance style, like Dance Hall, to make you even sharper.

Step 6: Profit!

What is your age group...my answer depends on this. Go to a club and find a guy who is starting to dance with a girl. If that girl has friends jump in and do whatever you see the other guy do. After enough repetitions of this, you will hopefully start to pick up your own dance style and won't have to imitate.

Dancefloor game is the easiest pick up. Bass music is best. Easy! Just be strange and enjoy yourself.

I suppose that's not too helpful, but I found the best way to learn was merely to go out to the music I really liked, and then experiment by feeling out the music. Look around at people who seem to be having the feeling you are, and if you like what they're doing, incorporate some mimicry.
