Focus on actually not being clingy, rather than merely not appearing clingy. If you're genuinely not clingy, it will come through. Otherwise, you'll have to learn to be a really good actor (completely unsustainable in the long run) or your clinginess will eventually come through.

There should be a lot of texting guides in the sidebar. Might be worth checking out.

Texting is for planning things, you shouldn't make small talk over text. Just ask her out. If she is interested she'll say yes but if she isn't interested, she'll probably say that she is busy or that she can't.

I would probably try to build some attraction next time we talked in person, suggest we go out sometime then, be told yes hopefully, and if I am...Then I'd just use texting to have a little bit of humor and fun, but focus on being direct with getting the date set up.
