Is it considered weird to add mutual friends on Facebook?

Friends of friends. Or even friends of acquaintances.

Let me answer this with a question: Is it weird to just call people up if you don't know them? Even if you have mutual friends?

You probably already know the answer to this but you're hoping to find a loophole because there's some "mutual friend" out there that you're dying to add. Well, it's too bad because unless you can meet them in person, you're not going to be able to build a decent connection to get started, over text.

If you have a positive connection with the friend (co-worker you see everyday, party friend etc) then why not? I rarely do it, but when I do I just text, before sending a f-request something like "Hi, just saw you know X and looked cute, what's up?", it has worked twice, got a nice conversation until I realized one had a boyfriend and k-closed with the other on a later night date (good thing of having a friend in common is that you can just ask him if she's a psycho and vice versa). It might work, it might not, sometimes your 'middle' friend might get pissed, but it's worth it.

I think it's definitely not weird at all. One of my mom's friends is smoking hot and one day I decided what the heck, I'm going to go for it. I added her on Facebook and she immediately added me back. I immediately sent her a chat message saying "what's up sexy lol" and she replied back "nm just chilling by the pool my nigga." I messaged back saying "you know that's racist rite? lol" and she sent me an instant message saying "yea haha. anyways come over lil boy." This got me so rock hard because I knew it was on. I put on my best cologne and sexiest shirt and started over to her house as fast as I could. Unfortunately when I was about halfway my wheelchair tipped over and I had to call my mom to pick me up. Also I realized that it wasn't a woman I was messaging it was my dad.

I've been talking to this girl for a few months now, and when we first decided to go on our first date, she had already added a friend of mine to her list that had lots of other mutual friends between her and ... her. It seemed weird to me at the time, but it didn't really matter. Trust is really important if you're working toward something meaningful. It's ok for people to do their research, and bringing it up or faulting them for it is never a good idea. Hell, with this girl, I've openly talked with her about the "homework" I did on her before we dated, and even expressed how what I learned has juxtaposed to what I know since I've gotten to know her. She's never seemed turned off or anxious about that, and we're doing great. I think this kind of trust is a great thing. It's something new to add to the many layers of a relationship, and it's new because this age of social media is really reaching a peak in terms of how many lives are intertwined through services like Facebook.

Now, if you're asking because you're thinking about adding one of her "mutual friends" to your facebook friends list, I wouldn't recommend it unless a) she's already done this to you, or b) you have an immediate connection, aka you've met them before and they'll remember you, or you sincerely want to talk to them about their trade/job, and it justifiably relates to your life. For example, they're a welder, and you have a bicycle frame that needs to be fixed. Other than that, steer clear. While (as i said before) it's a matter of trust and can be a good thing to build on ... you don't really want to put your partner in that position and risk developing feelings of suspicion or mistrust because of their reaction.

TL;DR: Don't sweat it, and don't make it a big deal. Don't DO it unless you have an actual connection to that person.

Don't add people you don't know. Instead, ask your mutual friend to introduce you. Organize a group outing and have your friend invite her friend.
