NSFW tag.

Edit: The assumption with this video is that men and women behave differently due to social norms rather than chemical differences in the brain.

You don't think that Cocaine or Marijuana have the same effect do you? Why would you think Testosterone and Estrogen have the same effect?

I don't think this video is supposed to imply that society just happened to go one way with gender norms when it could have gone the other. On the contrary, I don't think the creators of this film could possibly see a world in which these could ever be the gender norms that men and women take on.

Rather, their point is that the kinds of sexual violence often perpetrated against women, from casual dismissal based on gender and religious oppression up to being accosted on the street or being violently sexually assaulted, seem shocking and unacceptable when perpetrated against a man. That's not because it's worse when these things happen to men, but because we're so used to seeing them happen to women that we've become numb to it.

But that's not accurate either, because if an ugly woman starts flirting with a man, the man doesn't see it as being sexually assaulted. But if an ugly man starts flirting with a woman, he's sexually assaulting her. They're two very different sexes and each think differently.

There's a reason these things happen. Men want sex, and women guard sex. Some men catcall because it's a numbers game. 99 women are offended but 1 woman has sex with you? BAM! catcalling is a success. Women don't catcall men, because the method of women attracting a mate is to look attractive and wait for men to come to them. Catcalling is a way for men to quickly gauge interest in a female. She doesn't like it, she's not interested. The only reason it's a big deal is because that woman is afraid he's going to rape her due to this "EVERY MAN IS A RAPIST" Culture extreme feminism is trying to prove exists, when all the guys doing is looking for someone who wants to have sex with him.

As far as violent sexual assault 1/71 men are raped by men, 1/21 men are raped by women, 1/20 women are raped by men and I was unable to find statistics for woman who were raped by women. 1/21 vs 1/20 isn't a huge difference, especially when you also account for 1/71+1/21 vs 1/20. So to state it doesn't happen against men is not only ignorant, it's insulting.

Edit: Wikipedia statistics for rape by gender with

It's not about drawing parallels to men being hit on by an ugly woman. This film is about the female experience, except the female roles are played by men, and the gendered language is switched, because that makes for a more interesting and provocative film.

if an ugly man starts flirting with a woman, he's sexually assaulting her.

Nobody thinks that an ugly man flirting with a woman is sexual assault. If someone makes relentless sexual advances to someone, and they clearly don't appreciate those advances and can't make them stop, it's gross and uncomfortable. That doesn't matter what gender you are. It does happen more often that it's men coming on to women, though.

The only reason it's a big deal is because that woman is afraid he's going to rape her due to this "EVERY MAN IS A RAPIST" Culture extreme feminism is trying to prove exists

Most women don't appreciate being aggressively sexualized. I imagine most men wouldn't either, come to think of it. It's rude and uncomfortable. I wouldn't like being constantly told by people that they wanted to fuck me, especially if most of them were large enough to physically overpower me, even if I don't actually think in that moment that they'd do so.

And I wouldn't want my female friends and family members to have to endure cat-calling if they don't like it, would you? But that's not because I think I and every other man is a rapist. It's just shitty to have to put up with.

So to state it doesn't happen against men is not only ignorant, it's insulting.

Nobody said that -- not in this thread, and not in the film. Not sure where you got that.

Sounds pretty one-sided to the rape problem.

The rest is all about how someone feels. As far as feelings go, they're yours and yours alone. This world doesn't give a shit about your feelings, my feelings or anyone's feelings, male or female. If I don't like the feeling of something, I fix it. If I can't fix it, I avoid it. That's how the world works. You can put up a stick to prevent a rock falling on you, or you can move out of the rocks way, but it doesn't matter how much you want gravity to stop... it wont.

Well, yeah... it's a film that has a subjective viewpoint. It's not a scientific study or a white paper. It's also not just about rape, but about all sorts of sexual aggression that women experience. That the film focuses on that topic doesn't mean it inherently denies the existence of other problems. That it doesn't cover an issue that's of importance to you is an odd criticism to level against a short fictional film.

If I don't like the feeling of something, I fix it. If I can't fix it, I avoid it. That's how the world works.

Sure. And there are plenty of people who think that we can, indeed, "fix it" by deciding, as a society, that such behavior isn't something we condone. We've done it a number of times with other things, and we can certainly do it with aggressive sexualized behavior.

So, you want to kill all men?

[–]TRP VanguardCyralea 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Curious to know what you're hoping to get from us. If you flip gender roles you'll have surprising behaviour? Well yeah, if you do anything that deviates from the norm you'll encounter surprise, by definition.

The video is trivial in that it doesn't acknowledge the biological differences in desire between the genders. If men were catcalled regularly, a good percentage of them would take up the offer, regardless of society.
