The safe way starts with telling her you like her (Not saying you love her and you all are soulmates). Say you want to be more than friends but it's ok if she doesn't feel the same way.

Usually the friendship being ruined is because of a bad reaction by the person who was rejected. Or from being too intense when asking her (the don't say i love you part). As long as you are ok with her saying no and can move on you should be fine.

She knows. She is just waiting for you to man up and admit it. Any woman who says, "I didn't know you liked me that way" is a liar. We are not that subtle and should be embarrassed if we are.

Say this to her personally:

"Hi Amy, so we've been friends for a while now, but I just want you to know that I really find you attractive. And recently Ive developed strong feelings for you. That being said, I was wondering if you think we can take our relationship to the next level? If you dont feel the same way, I understand."

If she says she doesnt want to be in a romantic relationship dont push, that's the end of that. Then shift the topic to something less serious like where do you want to hangout next or what movie to watch later, etc.

It is important to be cool and chill should she say no in order to keep things the way it is.
