Muscle is attractive. Bones and fat are not.

Try to think of it as making a better version of yourself, and yes it will help, but mostly because it will boost your confidence and how you carry yourself, which in turns attracts the other gender.

Of course some are attracted to the muscles, but in the end that's mostly superficial.

So I used to be around your height/weight and still got attention from girls, BUT I was in an environment where I frequently met new girls and worked with women (retail). If I didn't have this, I probably wouldn't have gotten noticed at all.

That being said, I now weigh 143 lbs and have a decent amount of muscle, but not enough to stand out (I look slightly better than average now). To make things worse, I work in a cubical and only interact with coworkers who are already my friends (sigh, if only retail paid better). I have to make an effort to meet women and it's a lot of fucking work, especially considering I'd rather be home doing my own thing 90% of the time.

EDIT EDIT EDIT. An update just for some clarification for everyone: I didn't actually hook up with any of the girls I worked with (I really needed the job so I was not making moves on any of the girls). It was PLAINLY obvious that some of them wanted to hook up with me though.

So context for my work: bookstore, part-time, night staff, eventually became a night staff supervisor. Almost everyone was between the age of 18 and 25, most of the girls were 18-23. I worked there when I was 23-25. I learnt many things, which I will tell you about, and not necessarily in chronological order.

First lesson I learnt: pre-selection. It started with one girl, let's call her S. S had a crush on me, but was ridiculously shy. Her friend, let's call her L, ended up asking me out for S. L, S, and I would often chat about L's sexual exploits when we were bored and the store was quiet (this is important for later). Anyway, S and I ended up going to have drinks (I was still very inexperienced and was just going out to see how things went) but fuck me, S was cute but after a few drinks she got super emo about how "ugly" she was. I walked her home and she was expecting a kiss, and I went for a hug. No regrets.

Afterwards shit got real interesting. Some of the girls seemed to be really, really interested in me afterwards (heavy, heavy, pre-selection). One girl kept on dragging me off to the food court for mini-dates during our tea breaks, until eventually she realised I wasn't interested in her. Another girl who had a boyfriend started to flirt with me. What was really fucking ridiculous was the friend, L, who had asked me out for her S.

One night many weeks after I went on the date with S, S, L, and I were out for this street festival. We ended up bumping into this redhead girl who used to work with us (she had only recently left). I had the feeling that there was a mutual feeling of attraction between Redhead and I, and this night confirmed it. Redhead was so happy to see me, and her boyfriend was not. Anyway, we ended up splitting off from them. After the street festival, L is dropping S and I back home. This is when I learnt about the true nature of girls.

L literally drove past my house, and as we did S asks "Hey, aren't we dropping TheBetterManZA off?" and L completely deflects the question. We drop S off and then L drives me back. L pulls the car over, looks at me, asks "What are you doing now?" and then reaches over and puts her hand on the inside of my thigh. Now part of me wanted to bang this girl, and part of me knew she was a blabbermouth and I didn't want to lose my V card to this girl. I simply slipped out the car and told her "I'm going to sleep". She was not happy with me at all for a few days, but eventually she got over it.

Lesson two that I learnt was this: if you're paying attention, you'll realise more often than not, women choose you. This cute goth girl came into the story looking for a birthday gift for her Dad, who was huge into astronomy. I started to look on our system, and all the books we had were sold out. I even took her to the official section and there wasn't anything worthwhile. As she was about to leave, I realised we had some kick ass astronomy books on display in another part of the store, so I catch up with her and tell her about the book. She tells me it sounds perfect. I find the book, make the sale, and she asks me if I can wrap it for her. While I'm busy wrapping the book, she starts asking me questions about myself. I'm just talking, cracking a few jokes, keeping things light. I'm a very creative person so I tell her about my life, and then I finish wrapping up the book and I pass it to her. We both locked eyes and this was the first time I felt really, REALLY, strong physically chemistry with a girl. We stared at each other for what felt like a really long time. Suddenly I get really shy (this was when I was still very, very inexperienced with women) and I ask her if I can help her with anything else. She literally just stands there looking at me, and then after a bit goes "Oh, no. Thanks. This is perfect. It was really nice meeting you." And she walks off, turns, looks back at me, and then leaves. This story is one of my biggest fucking regrets at the bookstore, but it taught me an important lesson about pulling the trigger.

I will add more lessons but I don't have time to right now.

It's a great asset, but not something to fully depend on. I'm a skinny 6'2 guy, and over the past year and a half I've started working out religiously with great results. Went to ask out a girl I'd been chasing for a while and was rejected. Upon looking back, I did tons of things wrong, but the major factor that led to the rejection was the fact that I showed barely any of my personality. Having muscle can definitely benefit you, but won't be this lady magnet.

TL;DR: Having good character and being interesting is much more important.
