Depends on how old you are. If you're a teenager then the girl is just trying to get your attention. If you're like really old in your 20's you could very well be ugly. Work on that.

A buddy of mine amplifies it. They say he is ugly, he tells them they're right. Or they say he is short, he tells them "ya, I'm ugly, too.". It leaves chicks without a place to go, and shows he can take it.

Are you negging them first? If you’re the one initiating it, stop.

My personal opinion: negging is flawed and fucking stupid. You’re essentially caving that the girl is above you so you need to knock her down a peg or two. You’re starting off the interaction by conceding she’s superior. Why would a chick hook up with a guy who’s knowingly beneath her?

Looks don't matter to some girls but do matter to other girls. Just like guys, what some women find attractive, others find unattractive. And just like guys, some women are jerks.

It sounds like you have identified the factor you can change - an aggressive approach. If it works for you some of the time and gets you shot down (aggressively) others then you can either drop the approach, keep using the approach and deal with the occasional insult, or you can start varying your approach after you feel out different people's personalities.

First off all don't try to overtly pull in front of a group to avoid this.

Second, a good way to not be peeved by people talking shit to you in general is by analyzing what's going on in their psychology that's causing them to talk shit. You don't need to do anything with that analysis, just think that stuff in your head. This shifts your focus from how you're feeling to what's going on with her. Hard to be self-conscious when you're being "other-conscious".

I'm pretty sure Jordan Peterson said in an interview that one of the ways he handled Cathy Newman was by looking at her like she was one of his therapy patients which is how he was able to stay pretty detached from the situation.
