Really. The hardest part is always approaching. Remember, humans are social beings. Socializing often takes care of itself if you just let it. Just say hi and take things from there.

Don't put pressure on yourself to take it anywhere. It can just be casual conversation. If things go well, that's when you take it up a notch.

Don't do it in the gym unless you:

get good IOIs, and even then good luck
see her talking to someone you're already a friend of and then ask how you know each other etc
if she's part of a group that's trained there that you've seen, just curious etc...

If you don't get one of these three, just approach outside the gym if you see her, and be mature about it, if she turns you down. Though if you approach in the gym, and you see her there more than once in forever, maybe play the long game and don't go for a number the first time, maybe FB messenger first.

Generally don't approach in the gym. Most girls don't want to be bothered, that is unless you're really really good looking, and most of us aren't.

Girls tend to treat the gym as a place where they can get exercise, get smelly and sweaty with no makeup on now so they can be pretty later when they shower, get dolled up and go out.

Start off by being a " regular". Everyone at a gym has the same underlying goal. Say Hi to pretty much everyone. Try to start up some small talk, learn names.

You talk gym with them, then you can transition to hanging out. If other people in the gym seem comfortable with your presence, new people who come in will feel welcome of your approach.
