One thing that isn’t often spoken about is how hard it is for men to approach women. It’s actually one of the hardest things we ever have to do and that’s the reason why the vast majority of us only ever do it while drunk and specially defined scenarios like a bar or a club. Well I don’t want to be that way anymore and have decided to get over this fear once and for all so to that end I’ll be approaching 2 women every day for 50 days and writing about what happens.

And just so we’re clear; this isn’t about ‘getting laid’; it’s about breaking through my personal limitations and learning to become a much stronger man. When a guy approaches a girl he doesn’t know, every one of his insecurities are shoved right into his face in technicolour HD and it’s in that moment that he really finds out what he’s made of.

It’s time to find out what I’m made of. Let’s do this.

FYI – ANY OF THE WOMEN YOU SEE IN SELFIES WITH ME HAVE BEEN TOLD ALL ABOUT TH CHALLENGE AND GIVEN THEIR EXPRESSED PERMISSION FOR ME TO POST THEIR PICTURES ONLINE

Day 6 – woman number 1 – Soo Yung

I was nursing a hangover from a night of alcoholivity this morning when I saw a really pretty Asian girl walking by, seemingly without a care in the world. Now please believe me when I say that no part of me wanted to speak to this woman. Firstly; the remnants of booze that were still coursing through my bloodstream made the concept of speaking to strange ladies seem like nothing I wanted any part of. Secondly; I was waiting for an Uber and it was probably due at any minute. Either way I decided I’d like and respect myself more if I did the approach irrespective of the outcome and found myself running across the road and planting myself firmly in front of her.

After being taken aback at having a fully grown adult male suddenly jump into her path, she said that her name was Soo Yung and that she was from Korea and studying a master’s degree. When said adult male (that’s me) asked what she was up to, she said she was on her way to work as a waitress in a restaurant, but that she was actually a bit early. Now, having completely forgotten about my Uber at this point, I was seconds away from inviting her to send 15 minutes chatting with me in the nearest Starbucks when said Uber actually arrived. I asked her for her number, she gave it to me, I told her to have a great day, and then got into the car.

Woman number 2 – Jessica

Here’s the selfie I took with her

Woman number 2 was much later on in the day and was a fitness chick with brown hair and yoga pants who was walking with considerable pace. I stopped and spoke to her and she said her name was Jessica and that surprisingly enough she was on her way to the gym. I asked when her class started and she said ‘In about 20 minutes.’ so I said ‘Great, that means you and I have time to talk.’ She then said ‘What would you and I have to talk about?’ to which I said ‘Oh you know, general getting to know one another chit chat.’ She then said ‘Oh well, that’s really nice and all, but I’m gonna let you know right now that I’m already spoken for and therefore not interested. But thank you anyway because you’ve honestly made my day.’

After that I told her about this challenge and she said she thought it was a very interesting idea. I then asked her if she’d be willing to let me interview her and she shot me down immediately so I followed up by asking if she’d be willing to take a selfie together, which she was more than happy to do. We took our selfie, shook hands, and went our separate ways.

6 days down, 44 to go.

Thoughts

First things first, alcohol destroys your confidence in more ways than one. Feeling like you need to be drunk to approach women is terrible because it subtly implies that you’re not enough to do so without having drugs in your system. Also, the confidence high you get from booze is very short lived and comes with a massive crash, which is what I experienced today. Fair enough I had a good interaction with Soo Yung but honestly, I’m pretty sure that had more to do with me randomly happening to be her type than anything else because I honestly felt like crap and had trouble stringing my sentences together.

Also, I’m really starting to internalise the fact that romantic rejection doesn’t have to be a big deal. If I’d had the situation with Jessica happen a week ago or so, I’d have been a bit bothered but ultimately striven to overcome that displeasure; but today I didn’t feel a thing. She wasn’t interested and maybe that’s because she genuinely is in a relationship or maybe it’s because she took the measure of me and found me somewhat repugnant?

Either way she seemed like a lovely girl and we took a nice selfie together.

Jessica, if you’re reading this, I wish you all the best. 🙂

Ciao for now, humans.
