I went in direct, even though I usually go indirect, because I wanted to try it out, and was also tired of having those long, nice chats, only to find out she has a boyfriend later rather than sooner. I usually try to be friends with girls I hit on who aren't interested in dating, but I have enough friends now, so trying to keep in touch with every girl I chat to and have a nice conversation with just isn't practical anymore.

After the "water" opener, I just told her straight up about how sometimes you see somebody who's cute that you want to talk to, but there's literally no actual justification to talk to them, so you just have to say anything. This is direct, and made it clear I was hitting on her, so it made sense for her to let me know right then that she has a boyfriend.

On the other hand, I went indirect with a girl yesterday on the train. Great chat, cool person. I only find out later that night over text that she's saying somebody, and she said she didn't want to just "blurt that out" on the train. Fair enough, but it'd be nice if there were a way to separate the single ones from the taken ones without giving away too much power.
