Yeah it's definitely a little weird, especially because she's aware of the fact that she's at work and can't leave. She also might be afraid that you now know where she works and you can pop up at any moment.

Otherwise just make small talk and let the conversation flow naturally. Maybe mention you've seen her around and that you think she's cute.

Go buy something from the store, ask her for advice about it or wathever you found in the store. Say thank and comment that you have seen her at the University before... And talk about university things or wathever. If it's a low work place she maybe boring and want to talk just to pass the time

I approached a girl in a shop under my hotel in Vegas one time. The interaction went really well and we ended up sleeping together for my time in Vegas. Here's how I did it I hope my anecdotal account gives you some value!

I went into the store asked about the product (retail shirts) and then said that she was cute. I mentioned I was in town for the weekend, and said "Heres MY number if you want to hang out awesome, if not don't sweat it. I do think you're cute but it's up to you no pressure." I put the ball in HER court. She thought that was very nice of me, she even mentioned that she was kinda put off at first when I told her I wanted to hang out, but when I did that it really impressed her and took the pressure off of the whole situation and thats what drew her in. (She SPECIFICALLY mentioned it later to me in the date).

It is cornering and can be strange when you approach someone in an area where they cant leave. Thats why in these situations you keep the conversation sort, sweet, and to the point. Shoot your shot, then leave. Read the situation, don't rush it but don't allow it to extend too far, its really an art to be able to read the situation (even I extend conversations longer than they need to be at times).

IMO it can be really exciting and interesting to approach a girl in her place of work, especially if she works retail and is bored. It makes her normal routine day have an exciting event in it. But you have to be experienced enough to read the situation really well and come off as collected and cool.

In conclusion, give her YOUR number be direct let her know your interested, try to build a little rapport with her, and leave. If she doesn't text you back bite it, take it in your pride, put your ego aside, move on and try again with another girl. But most importantly work on your inner game, exercise, eat healthy, and build that confidence so you can be more centered. If that doesn't work you can always try smashing some eggs against the window and rubbing your chest against it. That always seems to work.
