A(nchor)-This is an observation. For example, you see that she's wearing a Minnesota State T-shirt. You: "Are you from Minnesota?" or "You've been to Minnesota?"

R(eveal)-Your thoughts on the observation. For example, "I absolutely love Minnesota! I was in Minneapolis over the Winter and it felt like home. A place where I could live. etc"

Cheesy pick-up lines can work in some contexts but they can also back-fire (badly) so care must be taken. Being creative and contextual is a plus -- in other words, your pick-up should ideally have some spontaneity. Much easier said than done, of course.

It's generally a bad idea to do body compliments as an opener, unless you're at a nightclub or some other context where blatant objectification is within range of being permissible. The girl shopping over in the organic produce aisle probably isn't going to be receptive to hearing how hot her jeans make her ass look.

The real secret is that the very first words out of your mouth don't actually need to be witty or noteworthy. It's not like you're in a movie, so just open with ordinary chit-chat -- weather, traffic, the daily grind, life around town, and so on. After (if) she responds, you now have an open channel to show off your Shakespearean wit. I think this is better because, not only do you have her attention, but you get a sentence or two's worth of time to think about what to say.

Example:

You: "Wow, I'm really enjoying the sun, how about you?"
Her: "Oh yeah, I'm so glad it finally stopped raining, I thought the sun was never going to come back out again."
You: <clever opener goes here>

As far as openers, I think that a contextual remark is better than a canned line. But that's just my style. Everybody does it a different way. But I think that opening with a brief line of chit-chat before jumping into the icy waters of trying to compliment her, ask her out and/or get her number is a good way to go.
