It's not the only way for everyone, but it sounds like it's the only way for you, which is fine. Getting in shape and upping my style reduced (not cured) my approach anxiety with talking to attractive women before I even started approaching, but I'm not everyone.
Regardless, it's something you have to do anyway and I'm sure it can only help you. Never put women on a pedestal, they are just human beings. They feel all the same emotions you do, anxiety, sadness, insecurity, no human being is exempt from human emotion, unless you're approaching sociopaths. She isn't a mythical being on another plane of existence she is just a person.
You know what you need to do? You need to do some research on the kinds of guys that are already hooking up with these girls, so you can understand that you are enough to get them as you already are and you need to do some research on how a lot of these girls look without makeup, extensions, lashes, and fashion nova jeans. Realize that you're falling for the trap of seeing her all done up and it makes you project qualities onto her that she may not even have.

Start with the "paid to be nice" women. Those are the waitresses, bartenders, checkout cashier, etc. Just talk general. Nothing extravagant. "Hi how are you today". Then you can build from there. I was similar to you....and that was a good start for me.

Truth is your anxiety doesn’t go away. However the more exposure you get by talking to a lot of girls your anxiety level will 100% decrease to a point where approaching isn’t that big of a deal. So YES you need to go approach to gain experience because experience will decrease your anxiety overtime, tested and promise!
