Let them ask the pertinent questions.

Them “hey, what brought you to NYC? You “I came here for grad school.” Them “cool, what do you study?” You “I’m finishing up my PHD in astrophysics”.

Another example. You “Hey what’s up? Them. “Not much. Went to the beach this weekend.” You: “That’s cool. Did you get any surfing done?” Them “no I don’t surf. Do you?” You “yeah I used to when I lived in Sydney.”

Learn to direct the conversation into topics where you will inevitably be asked about something you have something cool to say. But wait, don’t rush to say your cool bit.

Man I’m the opposite. I need to hold back the bragging usually.

Just do a lot of great things and you’ll naturally want to talk about them. With that, you’ll find a reason to bring up the fact that yesterday you were able break your bench PR. Also try hanging out with more narcissists.
