Depends on how serious the league is. Usually they are casual, so as long as you put some effort in, I wouldn't say its going to majorly effect your status. I would go as far and say the opposite can be worse. If you are too good and try way too hard that can definitely lower your status unless it's an ultra competitive league

Join a hobby group that you're actually good at, don't just join a group to meet women

not really as long as you put effort in and are not the butt of the joke "pass to him let him have a shot". But if you go try your best and are genrally good vibes its a great way for your personality to shine through an build social value if you're a likeable presence
