Hi, I live in a European country and have decent income, but at this point of my career I am told I can easily get a job in a tech company, obviously in California. The salary would be much higher but, among so many factors, there is the divorce/alimony problem.
I am 40, my wife 38, married for 11 years, childfree. Currently we have assets for ~700k$, we are saving aggressively and aiming to retire early. In California I should be making probably 300k$ after taxes, which sounds astronomical.
The issue is that I suspect our marriage may have problems in future (various reasons...decreasing communication and intimacy, etc...). In fact the pessimistic part of me thinks it will be inevitable.
My wife won't work in California as she is a teacher and she doesn't speak good English. Currently I live in a country with basically no alimony except in rare cases, so I never really cared about the financial implication of a future divorce. I have always considered divorce a situation where we split assets 50:50 and move on, but now I am discovering this alimony concept you have over there.

Having to pay alimony on that massive salary would easily mean a financial obligation of several millions, especially if it's for life, so I would say goodbye to any early retirement.

In fact I more or less convinced of not moving to USA (for many reasons actually), even because I am fairly content with living in my country, but I wonder if I am over-paranoid about this alimony stuff?

I tried asking on another subreddit and I was insulted to "leave my wife destitute" and was even called "abuser" so I thought this subreddit may give me some better insight (I mean I sort-of expect you'll to tell me that my alimony paranoia is justified).
