I'm a bit embarrassed about this which is why I'm posting here instead of other parts of reddit. But I'm a grown woman and I don't know these basic girl things. My family of origin was pretty toxic all around, and my mom tried to force her version of femininity and beauty on me. Her version of "caring for yourself" was all about looking "perfect" 24/7. I could keep explaining, but basically my mom had turned me off from caring about things like this. Now that I'm in my 30's, I want to learn to nurture myself and do more than the bare minimum self care (ok, sometimes that's hard for me too).

I also recently got some skincare product samples and am feeling a bit inspired. I've never really done much for my skin besides take baths and drink water, and my skin on my face is usually clear. I just wash my face with water unless it feels grimy or dirty, then I'll use a small amount of soap. It looks tired, but getting a better sleep routine should help. I have acne on my upper back almost constantly though. My skin can be dry in spots like my hands and oily in others (my skin, especially around the hairline and shoulders). I have been going through it mental health wise and not showering much so the back acne's been worse. I have started wearing small amounts of makeup some days, just lip gloss and eyeliner, and that's all I want to do.

My current plan:

Any tips or advice? Am I overthinking it and should just focus on hygiene, diet, and sleep?

I also have two quick questions. One, what's a manicure like? Is it painful? The only time I had one is when my mom (who's a cosmetologist) would force me to have them for homecoming/prom in high school. She'd push the cuticules on my nails and it would HURT. Is that normal for a manicure? I like painting my nails, and I always here people talk about manicures like they're enjoyable but from my experiences that's confusing to me.

Two, how do you put outfits together? I have clothes that would look good layered with other things, but I have a hard time picking them out. I'm developing a witchy/goth/punk style if that helps.

Thank you all! I'm nervous putting this out there. I'm kinda insecure about my appearance and talking about these things triggers that. But I want to develop my self-confidence and style and take care of my body like I love myself. So please be gentle.
