Just starting the divorce process and initially agreed to do this equitably. I offered her the house with about $250-300k of equity and basically everything in it. I make about $40k more than she does, so I offered $1200k a month alimony for 6 years, just want her to be able to keep the house as her disabled father lives there. I keep my retirement and investment accounts which are worth less than that. I assume the debt as most of it is my own anyway due to bad decisions. She agrees verbally, should have got it in writing, and prepare to move on.
This weekend she says she wants us to get lawyers instead of mediate to satisfy the court because she wants to see what she is entitled to get. She is a paralegal and has access to legal resources I unfortunately do not. I reminded her of the amicable talk, but no dice. I told her if she contests this it will end in court with a judge telling us to sell the house and split it, all I got was a “be patient and let things work themselves out.” Married 22 almost 23 years with adult kids, 22 and 18 neither in college. Basically, she wants me to move out, which I am in a month, and continue to pay the full mortgage, not gonna happen. Am I being unfair? Mind you, she has started the typical smear campaign to all our friends and family. I’m currently looking for an attorney.
