How to get the most out of the Army?

Awesome of you to sign up. Train harder than everyone else. Try to perfect yourself. Do not talk to women in your unit unless you need to as your job function. Read a lot of non-fiction books in your free time. Wear ear protection when there is live fire. Don't treat anyone like shit unless they fully deserve it. Make lots of friends. If you're a loyal person and willing to torment yourself even more to be the perfect man, give SF a try and test your mettle.

Focus on getting your quals, don't make dumb financial or life decisions. If you want to stay in you'll want to get a good commissioning program at some point. Try to be patient with the system, it is outdated and inefficient.

Why Army over other, better branches?

If you haven't sworn in yet, then I'd advise not going in and then either going to a 1/2 yr tech school to learn a trade or a 4 year shchool and get a USEFUL degree.

Unless you are doing Career Army; it's a bad (awful) life choice.
