Playing the devil's advocate here, but some of this may be due to selection bias as well.

Due to how the justice system is, the barrier for fathers to get custody is way higher than for mothers. Thus, it's kinda expected that if a father is getting custody, either

  1. The mother is entirely absent or a grade A fuck up OR
  2. The father has the stability and support system to take care of the child much better than the mother, to the point that the judge has no choice but to give custody to him

Edit:

I didn't read the article completely before writing this article. To the author's credit, this is mentioned

This is what the single mother versus single father data is showing, not that single fathers are better than single mothers, but that single fathers only ever get custody if they are absolutely beyond any question of doubt, the best and only option, single mothers on the other hand frequently get custody even when they are by far and away resoundingly the worst option

This is testable if you can get enough data on widows and widowers. They didn't go through the court system.

This is a Schödinger's cat situation.

Both situations can be true, that single fathers are better than single mothers, also that single fathers are no different than single mothers.

At this point, we can only move forward with the current study, that single fathers are better than single mothers.

In addition, how many of these single mothers were truly single and didn't dump their kids onto their boyfriend to raise? After all, it's not babysitting, the kids are part of the package.

Anecdotal: But I got custody of my son a year ago. He's 14 currently. He's doing better across all pillars: academic, social, athletic, physiological. It's almost night and day. And he was a great kid even before living with me.

Medium is notorious for practically saying hate speech against men. I'd stay away from there completely if I were you. It's not worth it

I suspect that for the first few years of life many children would benefit more from being with the mother rather than with the father, and later on, certainly by adolescence, they would benefit more from being with the father than with the mother. I'm pretty sure this is the case for me at least, but I suspect it could generalise to at least some other people.

My parents divorced when I was in high school and when my dad moved out it was horrible, she was an extreme case of a helicopter parent while also depending on teenage me for a lot of emotional support, accompanying her bra shopping and calming her down from her tantrums when they didn't have her size in stock etc. And I couldn't tell her about all the bullying that was going on because she would just make it worse.

I feel like fathers in general would be better at giving teens the space they need without just leaving them to rot in their bedroom, and also be better at tolerating their anger as well as minor misbehaviour (shit like going to parties and coming back slightly drunk)

I just found out this is called covert incest or emotional incest, I had no idea this existed until I read the post before this one
