How are you finding Doctors, Counselors, & support people who are empathetic to men's issues?

As with so many other things, it’s important to do your homework. Online reviews are often available for medical and other service providers, and you can get a better sense of how they’ll treat you from reading those and checking to see what awards and accolades they’ve received.

It would be more helpful if you had a specific scenario in mind. But with what you’ve given me I’d say seek out providers who are also male and be direct. If you have a problem specific to men happening to you then say it, don’t beat around the bush and don’t be afraid to leave a bad provider.

If you're religious and looking for some counseling, you can try a pastor/rabi/etc. They usually only take 1 class on counseling in seminary so aren't so severely indoctrinated as someone with a counseling related major. You used to be able to look for older male counselors, before all the indoctrination took over in colleges, but they've mostly retired out now.

Pastors can be just as bad however. I remember one book on marriage written by a pastor and his wife. He wrote the half for husbands and it was all about what he should be doing for his wife. That seemed fair, we could all use some tips on understanding what the other usually wants and needs. Out of curiosity, I read the half written by his wife for women expecting a similar approach. Nope. It was all about what wives should expect and how to manipulate him into doing it. After that, I learned to try to first figure out if a pastor's wife respected him first before I bothered trusting his relationship advice.

It's difficult because I need to feel like I'm being heard as a person first, but who *also* isn't so much of a chickless-friends dude that he doesn't understand nuanced situations — so that he doesn't give *me* too much benefit of the doubt!

Like I don't mind explaining a polyamorous term, but I wouldn't want a male therapist who I have to explain consent to.

EDIT: If you get a complimentary call to feel each other out, great. But finding the right therapist sometimes just involves 1-3 sessions to figure it out. You're welcome to interview them and say what your concerns are! I expressed a priority of sex-positivity (I talk about sex for a living) and who isn't going to pathologize my nonmonogamy. (You might even be surprised by certain female counselors, but I get if that trust isn't there yet.)

So you could say you're concerned about an anti-male bias — but you have to be open enough to have your viewpoints or experiences challenged. That's therapy, not even someone debating you. They're going to ask "why do you think that?" and you can't view it as an attack. Otherwise I don't think therapy will ever work for you.
