Straight M23

Hey everyone, I could really use some advice. I seem to have no problem getting to the first date, but the second date? That’s where things always fall apart for me.

Here’s the situation: I’m a big texter. I like to text a lot before a date—sometimes for a week or two—and I feel like I build a good connection that way. But when it comes to the actual first date, something isn’t clicking.

I think the issue might be my communication style in person. I switch between fun, lighthearted jokes and more serious, personal questions or opinions. It feels like I’m trying to cover a lot of ground, but I can’t seem to break the ice beyond the surface level—basic “job interview” talk. Flirting in person is hard for me, even though I can flirt online without much trouble.

After the first date, I always follow up with something like, “Did you get home safe? I had a great time and would love to see you again next weekend.” But usually, the response is lukewarm—something like, “Oh, I can’t, something came up.” They don’t suggest an alternative, and the texting gets drier until it eventually fades out.

Here’s where it gets even more confusing for me: 1. How do I know if it was a proper date and not just hanging out? Sometimes I’m not sure if they even saw it as romantic. 2. How do I break out of the friendzone if things are leaning in that direction? 3. How can I make it clear that I’m looking for something more than friendship without being too forward?

For context, I do try to get a little touchy on dates (in a respectful way) to break the physical barrier—like a light touch on the arm during a laugh or joke—but it still feels like I’m not communicating what I want clearly enough.

I’m also looking for advice on a few other things: • How do you go from basic conversation to flirting naturally on a first date? • What’s a good follow-up for a second date that doesn’t feel forced or awkward? • Any tips for texting that might help build better momentum after a first date?

I send voice notes and quick selfies here and there, and I like keeping things fun via text, but there seems to be this invisible barrier when it comes to securing that second date.

If anyone’s been in this situation or has any advice, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

TL;DR: I can get first dates but not second ones. Struggle with flirting and breaking the ice in person, unsure how to show I want more than friendship. Need advice on transitioning from small talk to flirting, setting up a second date, and keeping texting momentum alive.
