Hi all—looking for some insight or advice from anyone who's dealt with this kind of situation, especially in Washington State.
I divorced last year. As part of the agreement, my ex was awarded the home, and I agreed to stay on the mortgage while she was given 3 years to refinance and remove me from the loan. I know—agreeing to that was a mistake. At the time, I thought I was doing the right thing for our kids, knowing she likely couldn’t qualify for a refinance right away. But it’s turned into a long-term liability that I no longer have control over.
Since the divorce, my relationship with the family has completely broken down. I’m no longer part of their lives, have no access to the property, and yet remain financially exposed if anything goes wrong with the mortgage. I haven’t contacted the lender yet, but I’ve recently reached out to new legal counsel to explore options.
Has anyone here successfully taken action to get off a mortgage in this kind of situation—before the court-ordered refinance deadline? I’m open to hearing anything that might help me understand what’s realistic and what my options might be from here.
Thanks in advance.
