The assassination of gay men in homophobic countries is sometimes erased and treated as a regular crime whereas the assassination of straight women, bisexual women and lesbians is always considered gender-based violence (violence against women)

Years ago when a medical student was killed in homophobic country (Algeria), many Algerian channels erased in the news any mention of sexual orientation as the motive of the crime in TV channels, online articles....etc

However you will never see the media erasing sexism as the motive of crimes against women (which include closeted lesbians and closeted bisexuals).

One thing that gay men's experiences of homophobia teach us is that when someone is not part of other people's family, is different from you, and is seen as weak and going against religion, people will often treat him worse than an animal and no one will stand with him—unless they are like him (according to the thinking of homophobes)—and what happened will be denied in the news as homophobia because acknowledging homophobia could lead to more LGBTQ+ advocacy.

And there are a lot of episodes in the TV channels of homophobic countries about violence against women (which include closeted lesbians) but you will never find episodes in the TV channels of homophobic countries about violence against gay men.
