To the United Nations: Request for Adoption of a UN Resolution Recognizing International Men’s Day

I. Introduction

The International Council for Men and Boys (ICMB) respectfully submits this request for the United Nations General Assembly to consider and adopt a resolution formally recognizing November 19 as International Men’s Day. This proposal aligns with the UN’s stated mission of promoting equality, dignity, and inclusion for all people. While the United Nations currently observes over 150 international days—ranging from International Women's Day to World Toilet Day—it has yet to formally recognize a day for men and boys.

II. Rationale and Evidence

Across Member States, men and boys face persistent structural challenges that merit increased international attention. These include:

· Lifespan Disparities: Globally, men live an average of five years less than women (1).

· Mental Health: Suicide rates among men are nearly three times higher than among women (2).

· Education: In more than 100 countries, boys underperform in literacy and are less likely to complete secondary and tertiary education (3).

· Workplace Safety: Men represent over 90% of workplace deaths in high-risk sectors worldwide (4).

· Family Roles and Legal Access: Fathers are significantly underrepresented in custodial arrangements and face legal and cultural barriers to parental involvement (5).

Recognizing International Men’s Day will not only spotlight these challenges but also provide a platform to celebrate the contributions of men and boys to families, communities, and societies.

III. Alignment with UN Norms and Principles

This proposal is rooted in the UN Charter’s founding commitment to “reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, [and] in the equal rights of men and women.” It builds upon the gender equality principles stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Articles 1 and 2), and echoes the goals of Sustainable Development Goal 5 to “achieve gender equality and empower all.”

IV. Global Support

A growing number of nations, civil society groups, and educational institutions already commemorate International Men’s Day on November 19. 

·      Over 300 events across the world were held in 2024 to commemorate both Men’s Equality Month (November) and International Men’s Day, (6).

·      The World Health Organization recognized International Men’s Day at least 4 out of 6 years, from 2016 – 2021, according to Grok (7).

These observances promote:

· Mental health awareness

· Positive male role models

· Advocacy against male suicide and homelessness

· Recognition of men’s roles in parenting, caregiving, and community service

Formal UN recognition would elevate these efforts to the global level and ensure broader inclusion and accountability across member states.

V. Conclusion

ICMB respectfully urges the United Nations General Assembly to draft and adopt a resolution declaring November 19 as International Men’s Day. Such recognition would be an important milestone in fulfilling the promise of true gender equality and human dignity.
