Thinking about asking my wife for a separation. I’m not very happy, but the question is will I be less happy if I’m broke forever.

We’ve been married 8.5 years. One kid. My assumption is we would split custodial.

I make $140k a year. She makes 48k a year, but only works part time.

Would I be on the hook for alimony for sure? For half the length of the marriage? Is there any way they could grant permanent alimony? I wouldn’t want to take that risk. I’m in California.
